Does displaying users IP address pose a security threat?

Tags: technology   internet   ip address   security

On some systems, it may be beneficial to display a user's IP address to help identify the user. For example, on forums, this may make it less likely that the user will spam, knowing that they could be reported to their ISP. However, does displaying the IP address also pose a security threat?

Arguments For

Yes, it puts them at risk for a DoS attack especially if some other user has a gripe against that user.

It is also a privacy threat.

Arguments Against

No, it's fairly easy to get anyone's IP address either by having them click on a link. Also, IRC shows IP addresses.
