Arguments For

Yes, eating wheatgrass improves health

One 2002 study found that wheatgrass juice along with medical care helped to control symptoms ulcerative colitis. Those who drank 3 ounces of the juice every day for a month had less pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding than whose in the group drinking the placebo.[1]

While there are a lack of studies, there are few that refute it's benefits either. Wheatgrass provides a wide range of vitamins, enzymes and other nutrients linked to prevention of disease.[2]

One 3.5g teaspoon of wheatgrass powder is nutritionally equivalent to an entire 50.0g spinach salad.[3]

Arguments Against

No, wheatgrass is all hype

There are no existing scientific studies that supports the idea that wheatgrass can cure or prevent disease.[1]

Scientific Comparison

When compared with common vegetables such as broccoli and spinash, wheatgrass offers no clear advantage in nutritional value.

Wheatgrass contains 860mg of protein, brocolli 800mg and spinach 810mg.[4]
Wheatgrass contains 120IU of beta carotene, brocolli 177 IU and spinach 2,658 IU.[4]
Wheatgrass contains 1mg of Vitamin C, brocolli 25.3mg and spinach 8mg.[4]
Wheatgrass contains 880mcg of Vitamin E, brocolli 220mcg and spinach 580mcg.[4]

Spinach contains more calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus than Wheatgrass.[4]
Wheatgrass does not contain any exceptional nutritional compounds not found in broccoli or spinach. It is completely hype.

I think it helps, but it's not as special as most marketers want you to believe. Healthier than eating a greasy burger or something. - jennyhooah (twitter) 0

All hype. Look at the comparison between broccoli and spinach! Common vegetables with equal or more nutrition than wheatgrass. - thorie (twitter) vote up image vote down image 0
